Esparto, California- Population has increased with the building of “new homes.”
Originally named Esperanza, the town was built on the formerly named RHODA STEPHENS TRACT.
The Esparto Post Office was established in 1890. The Stephens family, who owned part of the Rancho Canada de Capay, first settled the region in the 1850’s, and in 1888 Rhoda Stephens sold 1,300 acres to the CAPAY VALLEY LAND COMPANY, a Southern Pacific Railroad holding company.
CAPAY VALLEY LAND COMPANY, planned to develop a large rural town, which would include a railroad and Depot, Packing Sheds and a “rural subdivision of 5, 10, and 20acre Parcels.
